What is Female Genital Mutliation

More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where FGM is concentrated.

Most of the time, FGM is associated with wrong conceptions of cultural ideals of femininity and modesty, which includes that girls are clean and beautiful after removal of body parts considered as unclean.

The practice is largely carried out by traditional circumcisers who often play a central role in communities. However, it is in the interest of the girls and society to change the mentalities, for three reasons:

  • It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes;
  • It constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women;
  • It violates a person’s rights to health, security and physical integrity.
