Can you get HIV and STIs from kissing?
Answer: SOME, YES. Herpes is the only sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can be passed through kissing. This usually happens when one person has a sore on or around the mouth and then kisses another person.
HIV CANNOT be contracted through kissing. Specifically, HIV can be passed through:
- Blood
- Semen
- Vaginal fluid
- Rectal fluids
- Breast milk.
HIV is most commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse with a person living with HIV; through sharing needles during drug use; and from mother to child during pregnancy, birth or the breastfeeding period.
