You can expect cramping and pain during and before your period. You may feel pain in your stomach area while your body is shedding the menstrual fluid. You also might feel sick, dizzy, or bloated, but it’s nothing to be concerned about. In fact, it’s much more common to experience some form of these symptoms than not. How can I lessen my PMS symptoms?

Here are some tips for easing your period pain:

  • Stay active When in pain, it’s tempting to lie in bed, but sometimes a 30-minute walk or some gentle stretching can help release the tension.
  • Get rest. At the same time, you’re losing iron which can lower your energy levels. Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep at night to help your body manage your mood and stay alert.
  • Apply a heating pad. Warmth can help relax your muscles and reduce the constrictions.
  • Drink water. Always a good idea, but especially while you’re losing fluid.
  • Eat a balanced diet, including fruit and vegetables. Again, this is always a good idea, but especially while losing key vitamins and experiencing mood swings.
  • Take painkillers if the pain gets particularly bad. You can take a painkiller every 4-6 hours if you’re bleeding heavily and the cramping is severe.
