Identifying the harmful practice and say “NO”
Girls and women must have access to their basic human rights: they must have the possibility to say NO to any practice that will cause them harm. FGM is a violation of physical integrity, which can make girls feel ashamed to talk about it. Therefore, it is not always easy for them to make their voice heard. In most cases, mothers or other female members of the community are the closest models and caregivers for girls.
Mothers are the first adults who should be able to support their daughters. In order to help them understand what FGM implies, it is crucial that they are be able to identify the practice in its various forms:
- Clitoridectomy: the partial or total removal of the clitoris
- Excision: the partial or total removal of the clitoris and labium minus (smaller lips), with or without excision of the labium majus (big lips)
- Infibulation: the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal.
