What are the effects of violence in school?

The cost of not acting against violence in school is unacceptably high – for children, their families and communities, and for society as a whole!

Some effects of violence in school :

  • Toxic stress associated with violence in early childhood can impair brain development and damage the nervous system.

  • Globally, the cost of violence against children adds up to 7 trillion dollars a year, undermining investments in health, early childhood development and education.

  • Children who experience violence are more likely than other children to become perpetrators or victims later in life.

  • Violence decreases self-esteem, reduces attendance, lowers grades and leads many children to drop out of school altogether.

Violence in schools is common enough to feel inevitable. But it’s not. It’s preventable! And because we can prevent it, we must!

Students around the world are stepping up to demand the safety and education they deserve. It’s time to follow their lead.
