With an internet population of 3.36 billion and growing, almost half of the world is online. Being a good digital citizen is about using the Internet the right way. These top 10 tips will help you become an excellent digital citizen:
- Respect what others say on social media, even if you disagree.
- Don't share personal info like your address, phone number or bank details.
- Be careful when buying something online - only buy from trustworthy websites.
- Question anything that is “free” online - it could be a scam. (Of course, you can trust the Internet of Good Things - it was designed for this purpose.)
- Remember even free downloads can cost you money because they use data/ airtime.
- You can change the privacy settings on your social media platforms to help you control who sees your details.
- Don’t believe everything you read online - search for other trustworthy articles, websites or people to see what they’re saying.
- Everyone has the right to privacy. It is not okay to log into other people’s accounts or to use their phones or profiles without permission.
- Don’t spread rumors or post/share hurtful or embarrassing stories or photos. It may seem funny, but can hurt someone.
- Think twice before you share something , especially if you’re upset or angry. Once you share a photo or a video, it’s hard to control what happens next and who sees it.
